More Georgian Bay Adventures:

 This is the conclusion of the Georgian Bay adventures by Bob & Sandy White of the Renagade.

  Richard's Landing was a pleasant town and small marina.  We cruised to the "Soo" via Lake George that proved to be the "scenic route" entering the Soo by the Alternative Route to dock on the Canadian side at the Roberta Bondar Marina with the best access to all the Soo activity.  Here we encountered a violent thunderstorm with 50-60 MPH wind at the dock.  Due to the fuel prices very few boats compared to previous years.  We then cruised south on the St. Mary's River with a favorable current to DeTour Village via DeTour Passage.  Here you must clear US Customs that may require going to Fort Drummond.

  We then cruised to Cheyboygan, MI on the shores of Lake Huron and rented a car to tour Michigan and visit some of Sandy's relatives.  This provided an opportunity to see the Lake Michigan side, Traverse City, for example which was beautiful.

  The Great Lakes are small oceans themselves, and require careful weather monitoring.  Midwest thunderstorms can pack a lot of wind and rain.

  Macinac Island is a tourist destination, but worth a least one visit.  Reservations for dockage highly recommended. State of MI has toll free number or one line.

  On return, via DeTour Passage we anchored at Harbor Island (US) before stopping at Meldrum Bay Marina and checking in with Canadian Customs.  We explored the northern shore of Manitoulin Island back to Penetang stopping at Meldrum, Gore Bay, Kagawong, and Little Current before arriving at Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula.  Several lovely anchorages out of Gore Bay, i.e. Benjamins, but we chose Crocker Island which was ideal.

  Stopped at Lions Head, Wierton, Thornbury and Collingswood (all recommended) before arriving back at Penetang early September.
